来源:US tech stocks see sharp falls as AI spending nears $1tn;BBC,Rachel Clun,2026 年 10 月 30 日。
[1] Tech stocks tumbled for the second day in a row as concerns rise over the hundreds of billions of dollars firms are investing in artificial intelligence (AI).
[2] Shares in Intel plummeted by 28% on Friday, while Google owner Alphabet saw its stock price continue to fall another 1.4% after a 12% plunge on Thursday.
[3] Other tech stocks, including Reddit and Amazon also fell, while the Nasdaq index of the largest tech firms listed in the US, ended October with its worst monthly slide since March 2025.
[4] While tech firms are spending big on AI, their earnings are not always meeting analysts' expectations, spooking investors and creating fears of an AI bubble.
[5] Major tech companies have ramped up artificial intelligence spending, with Meta, Alphabet, Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft committing to spending $800bn between them in 2026.
[6] Alphabet's stock market value fell sharply on Thursday, taking more than $500bn (£374bn) off its market value after it revealed the AI summaries it now provides as the top answer to search queries were affecting its core search advertising revenue.
[7] At the same time, Alphabet expects to spend up to $205bn this year on investments, almost entirely related to AI.
[8] The bigger losses on Friday were elsewhere however, with Intel shedding more than $130bn in value.
[9] The chip maker said it planned to increase spending on AI despite weaker demand for computers, a major source of demand for its micro-processors.
[10] On Thursday, Intel's finance chief David Zinsner said the firm did not expect to bring in more cash than it spent this year and forecast lower-than-expected revenue for its fourth quarter.
[11] "Looking ahead, we see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year," he said in the chip maker's third quarter earnings report.
[12] In the earnings call, he said the firm had significantly ramped up investment in equipment in the third quarter and expected that to be "even more significant" in the following three months.
Amazon and Reddit down
[13] Amazon on Thursday revealed it had also spent more cash than it was making, and that spending had increased six-fold over the span of three months.
[14] The company has committed to spending $220bn this year, putting the money towards investments such as AI data centres, network equipment, and servers.
[15] Amazon shares recovered some overnight losses, but were still down by 1.4% at the end of Friday trading.
[16] Reddit stock plunged by 29%, after the social media platform revealed weaker-than-expected daily user figures and warned that Google's growing AI-driven search was hurting referral traffic.
[17] Stock in online game platform Roblox also fell, down by 18%, as its daily active user numbers dropped.
[18] Several major tech firms have reported earnings this week, including Microsoft, and analysts said there were questions about the payout from the huge investments in AI.
[19] Chris Low, from investment management firm FHN Financial, said the bulk of what was happening in the stock market was in reaction to some of the biggest tech players such as Amazon and Google.
[20] He told Reuters the companies were "showing some pretty significant growing pains as they aggressively pursue the AI build-out".
[21] "The thinking is that these signs suggest that the entire sector is going to slow down."
'Investors have turned ruthless'
[22] Many analysts have been debating the possibility of an AI bubble in the stock market.
[23] The worry is that some tech firms will not be able to justify their sky-high valuations because the cost of building AI data centres and developing the software will end up being greater than the money they can make from it.
[24] Kathleen Brookes, research director at trading firm XTB, said there have been many ups and downs in AI trade in recent months.
[25] "Investors have turned ruthless, punishing any signs of disappointment in [third quarter] earnings," she said.
[26] "The AI trade has had a good run in recent years, but now investors want payback, and companies like Alphabet and Intel are in the crosshairs."
[27] However, stock market values for many of these companies remain well above where they were a year ago.
[28] While the Nasdaq closed 2.8% lower, it is up 7.8% over the last year. Similarly Amazon is up nearly 8% over the past 12 months, while Alphabet is down 1.3%.
[29] Brookes noted that November is typically a strong month for stocks.
[30] "If we see AI stocks continue to struggle in the coming days, it could suggest the AI trade is past its peak, and investors will be looking for a new theme to drive markets," she said.

[4] While tech firms are spending big on AI, their earnings are not always meeting analysts' expectations, spooking investors and creating fears of an AI bubble.
主干:主句是 their earnings are not always meeting analysts' expectations,由 While 引导的让步从句限定;句末两个 -ing 短语作结果状语,逻辑主语是整个主句所述情况。
While governments are investing heavily in public transport, the benefits may take years to emerge, leaving commuters sceptical.
[10] Intel's finance chief David Zinsner said the firm did not expect to bring in more cash than it spent this year and forecast lower-than-expected revenue for its fourth quarter.
主干:said 后接一个宾语从句,从句内有两个并列谓语 did not expect to...
层次与易错点:宾语从句第一层是 did not expect + 宾语 to bring in more cash than it spent this year,其中 than it spent 是比较从句;第二层是与 did not expect 并列的 forecast lower-than-expected revenue for its fourth quarter。
Analysts said the firm did not expect demand to recover this year and forecast weaker sales for the next quarter.
[23] The worry is that some tech firms will not be able to justify their sky-high valuations because the cost of building AI data centres and developing the software will end up being greater than the money they can make from it.
主干:主句是 The worry is that...,表语从句里套一个 because 引导的原因状语从句;原因从句的主语是 the cost of building AI data centres and developing the software。
合理」;第二层原因从句里,will end up being greater than 把成本与收入作比较;第三层 the money they can make from it 中 they 指科技公司,it 指前文的 AI,不是紧邻的 software。
The concern is that firms cannot justify the price because running costs will be higher than the revenue they generate from it.
[28] While the Nasdaq closed 2.8% lower, it is up 7.8% over the last year.
主干:主句 it is up 7.8% over the last year,it 指纳斯达克指数;While 从句给出短期表现,与主句形成对照。
层次与易错点:closed 2.8% lower 里,2.8% lower 是说明 closed 结果的程度补语;is up 里的 up 是形容词作表语,不是动词。
While sales fell 5% last quarter, they are up 12% year on year.
Some people believe companies should accept lower short-term profits in order to invest heavily in new technology. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Large-scale investment in new technology rarely pays off immediately. Firms that build data centres or retrain staff may report lower profits for several quarters, and this is a reasonable price for long-term productivity. However, patience should not be unconditional. When companies cannot explain how the spending will generate returns, investors are right to treat it as risk rather than investment. Accepting lower short-term profits therefore makes sense only when the link between cost and future benefit is visible.

定位:[6]–[12] 依据:"the AI summaries it now provides ... were affecting its core search advertising revenue" 答案:两者原因不同。
定位:[27]–[28] 依据:"it is up 7.8% over the last year" 答案:报道同时给出单月与年度两个尺度。
Investors have turned ruthless, punishing any signs of disappointment" 答案:引用 XTB 研究主管 Kathleen Brookes 的判断,说投资者对任何不及预期的迹象都会惩罚,Alphabet 与英特尔成为焦点。
-
定位:[27]、[30] 依据:"it could suggest the AI trade is past its peak" 答案:没有下定论。
Part 2
Describe a business news story that you found interesting. You should say:
- what the story was about
- where you read it
- what surprised you and explain why it matters to you.
2 分钟提纲(52 词):I read a BBC piece about tech shares falling as AI spending nears a trillion dollars. What surprised me was that even firms promising to spend more were punished. It shows markets now judge spending by returns, not ambition. It matters because AI costs reach ordinary people through prices and jobs.
Part 3
-
Why do investors react so strongly to company spending plans?(出处:[4]) 思路:先讲预期管理,再讲现金与回报的时间差。 Investors price in future returns, so a plan with no visible payoff reads as risk rather than ambition. When money gets more expensive to borrow, holding cash also looks safer than expanding.
-
Should governments limit how much companies invest in AI?(出处:[23]) 思路:区分投资规模与投资风险,不把话题引向报道没有的监管结论。 I doubt size alone needs a limit. What matters is whether disclosure lets the public see the risks, especially when the same firms control both the models and the data. Without that, regulation is guesswork.
-
How might ordinary people be affected by this investment cycle?(出处:[11][18]) 思路:从就业、订阅价格、服务可得性三点作答。 If the spending slows, job cuts in hardware firms usually come first. Consumers may also find AI features bundled into subscriptions they already pay for, which raises the price of things they never asked to upgrade.
